For more than three decades, Renuka B. Salwan has been one of those professionals. Her career in public relations has spanned government organisations, higher education and national institutions, helping shape communication strategies at a time when public relations was continuously evolving from press releases to strategic engagement.

Beginning her professional journey with Semiconductors Complex Limited, Mohali, she later joined the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), where she served in various leadership roles for nearly twenty-seven years. During this period, she worked extensively in media relations, national publicity, communication strategy, official events and stakeholder engagement, contributing to the public visibility of one of India's most important standard-setting organisations.

Her experience eventually took her to the post of Director of Public Relations, Bureau of Indian Standards, where she continued strengthening communication initiatives at the national level before returning to Chandigarh to head the Public Relations Department of Panjab University as its Director from 2017 to 2021.

Whether promoting scientific standards or one of India's leading universities, her approach remained remarkably consistent; communicate with clarity, build relationships with credibility and represent institutions with dignity. Recognition naturally followed. Her contributions to public relations have been acknowledged through several professional honours, including the prestigious Chanakya Award, one of the country's respected recognitions in the field of communication. She has also played an active role in professional organisations dedicated to advancing public relations and communication practices.

My association with Renuka Salwan began in 2003, when I met her as a journalist during one of my visits to the Bureau of Indian Standards office in Chandigarh. Over the years, our professional paths crossed repeatedly through media interactions and public relations activities. Later, while serving as one of the office-bearers of the Public Relations Council of India (PRCI) Chandigarh Chapter, I had the opportunity to work more closely with her leadership.

What impressed me most was not merely her administrative ability, but her calm professionalism and respect for people. In a profession where relationships are often the greatest asset, she built them with sincerity rather than ceremony. Even after retirement from active institutional responsibilities, she continues to remain connected with colleagues, friends and communication professionals through social media, encouraging dialogue and celebrating the achievements of others with the same warmth that characterised her professional journey.

Away from official assignments and communication strategies, Renuka Salwan nurtures another lifelong passion. She has built an impressive personal collection of sarees gathered over the years from different regions, occasions and travels. For her, every saree represents more than fabric or design; it carries memories of places, people and important moments. Much like her professional journey, the collection reflects an appreciation for India's cultural richness, craftsmanship and timeless elegance.

Public relations is often misunderstood as publicity. In reality, it is about building trust. The career of Renuka Salwan demonstrates that the strongest institutional reputations are created quietly, through consistency, credibility and meaningful human relationships rather than momentary headlines.
