Specttrum Profiles: Some professionals are known for the precision of their work. Others are remembered for the warmth they bring to every relationship. CA Gurdeep Singh has quietly combined both qualities throughout his professional journey. Respected as a chartered accountant and financial consultant, he has spent decades helping businesses build strong financial foundations while carrying an equally deep love for Indian music, culture and community service.
Based in Chandigarh, Gurdeep Singh established Gurdeep Singh & Associates, a chartered accountancy firm that has earned the confidence of numerous industries, entrepreneurs and business houses across the region. His expertise extends well beyond taxation and accounting. Every year, when the Union Budget is presented, television channels and newspapers frequently seek his analysis to help businesses and citizens understand its practical implications. Round the year, he frequently keeps on appearing on regional television channels.
His own journey towards becoming a Chartered Accountant, however, was far from comfortable. Persistence became a defining quality early in life. As a student of Class IX, he suffered a serious accident that severely injured his foot. The pain was unbearable, yet he chose to complete his examinations the same day rather than lose an academic year. Only after the examinations did he undergo surgery, during which one of his foot fingers had to be amputated. The incident later found a place in my book Rock Solid Willpower because it demonstrated how determination often matters more than circumstances.
The same determination appeared again during his Chartered Accountancy studies. At one stage, his home was overflowing with relatives because of a family wedding, making concentrated study almost impossible. Instead of complaining, he quietly searched for a peaceful place away from home where he could prepare without distraction. The strategy worked. Looking back, he believes success is rarely built through big moments; it grows through discipline, consistency and the willingness to continue despite difficulties.
His academic journey began at Air Force Senior Secondary School, Palam, Delhi Cantonment, where he completed his High School education in 1983. He later studied at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, University of Delhi, before pursuing Chartered Accountancy, a profession that would define his career.
Behind the chartered accountant is a musician at heart. Long before music became a family tradition, it had already become a personal passion. While his weekdays revolved around audits, taxation and financial consultancy, his evenings often belonged to rhythm and devotion.
Music eventually became a family tradition. Gurdeep Singh and his wife encouraged both daughters, Gurleen Kaur and Jasleen Kaur, to begin Gurbani singing from an early age. Their dedication resulted in performances at numerous Gurudwaras across North India and culminated in the devotional album Daras Tere Ki Pyas Man Laagi. The album received encouraging media coverage and was appreciated within the Sikh devotional music community. For Gurdeep Singh, the achievement was never about publicity; it was about preserving a spiritual and musical tradition for the next generation.
Music was never limited to encouraging his daughters. Gurdeep Singh himself enjoys singing Gurbani and has shared the stage with Jasleen Kaur during devotional performances. Whether playing the tabla, harmonium, keyboard or dholak, music remains an inseparable part of his daily life. Even while driving home after a busy working day, he often finds himself unconsciously keeping rhythm on the steering wheel, as if rehearsing the next composition in his mind.
His passion later found expression through Wonder Waves, an initiative created to encourage emerging musical talent. Although professional responsibilities have limited the time he can devote to the venture, the dream remains alive. The initiative reflects his belief that talent deserves opportunities and guidance, particularly at a young age.
Music has also gifted the family many memorable moments. Internationally acclaimed Padma Shri recipient Puran Chand Wadali of the Wadali Brothers graced the wedding celebrations of one of his daughters, making the occasion even more special. Such moments reflect the respect the family enjoys within devotional and classical music circles.
My association with Gurdeep Singh began in 2008 at IVY Multispeciality Hospital, Mohali, where he looked after the hospital's financial affairs while Specttrum handled its public relations activities. Over the years, our professional association gradually developed into a lasting friendship.
He has been associated with many important milestones of my own journey. He has guided my financial matters, prepared my income tax returns for years and played an important role in registering the Prakash Foundation Charitable Trust, even offering his own residential address to facilitate the formalities. He also joined the Trust as one of its trustees. Likewise, he has supported over 15 other NGOs in different capacities.
His support often extended beyond finance. When I planned to present a traditional Sikh kirpan and pagri to legendary filmmaker Ramoji Rao, founder of Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, he helped arrange both with great care. On another occasion, he provided sacred angvastrams from Gurudwaras that were presented to senior farmers during a community awareness programme organised in my ancestral village, Palai. These thoughtful gestures reveal the person behind the profession.
Always smiling, soft-spoken and naturally modest, Gurdeep Singh rarely speaks about his own achievements. He prefers listening to others, offering practical guidance and quietly completing responsibilities without seeking attention. Perhaps that explains why people trust him.
Numbers have shaped Gurdeep Singh's profession, but people have shaped his life. Whether advising businesses, mentoring young professionals, supporting community initiatives or nurturing music within his family, he has always believed that success carries greater meaning when it is shared. His journey reminds us that integrity builds trust, relationships create lasting wealth, and the finest achievements are often those that quietly enrich the lives of others.
