Helping People Move Forward Again

Specttrum Profiles
: Movement is something most people take for granted. We notice its true value only when illness, injury or disability takes it away. For more than three decades, Prof. Dr. Virinder Singh Gogia has devoted his professional life to helping people regain movement, confidence and independence through the science of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Currently serving as Professor and Head, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (DrRMLIMS), Lucknow, Dr. Gogia continues to devote himself full-time to patient care, teaching and rehabilitation medicine. Earlier, he also shouldered the additional responsibility of Additional Registrar, contributing to institutional administration and policy matters. Even after being relieved of that assignment in early 2026, he continues to be invited as an expert member on various administrative and policy committees whenever required.

His professional philosophy is beautifully summarised in a simple acronym that he frequently uses: MAD - Maximizing Abilities despite Disabilities. Those three words capture the essence of rehabilitation medicine. His work extends across diverse areas including pain management, paralysis, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, post-polio rehabilitation, diabetic foot care, obesity and lifestyle rehabilitation. Alongside patient care, he has remained deeply committed to medical education, research and academic leadership.

Dr. Gogia's journey has taken him through several of India's premier medical institutions, including AIIMS New Delhi, Safdarjung Hospital, St. Stephen's Hospital, PGIMER Chandigarh, Sukh Sagar Medical College, Jabalpur, and finally DrRMLIMS Lucknow, where he now leads one of the country's important rehabilitation departments.

Behind these impressive credentials stands a remarkably cheerful personality. My association with Virinder goes back much further than medicine. We were classmates in the Intermediate Science classes at Government Inter College, Budaun, during 1981-82. Even then, he was among the brightest students in the class. Life later took us along different professional paths before bringing us together again in Chandigarh, where he had joined PGIMER as a faculty member while I was working as a journalist. Friendships that survive decades carry a special comfort.

In 2012, we travelled together to my ancestral village, Palai, under the banner of the Prakash Foundation, participating in a rural awareness programme that combined healthcare, media and community outreach. Watching an accomplished rehabilitation specialist interact naturally with villagers reminded me that medicine ultimately begins with empathy. Life, however, tested the doctor himself.

A few years ago, Dr. Gogia met with a serious road accident and suffered a significant head injury. Recovery demanded from him the same patience and determination that he had encouraged in countless patients throughout his career. Perhaps that personal experience deepened his understanding of rehabilitation even further.

Earlier this year, our friendship came full circle when I visited him at his official residence within the DrRMLIMS campus in Lucknow. We shared lunch, revisited memories from school and reflected on journeys that had begun in the classrooms of Budaun and eventually reached different corners of the country.

Despite occupying senior academic and administrative positions, Dr. Gogia has retained the same cheerful disposition that I remember from our student days. His laughter arrives easily. His conversations are filled with optimism. It is difficult to spend time with him without feeling encouraged. Rehabilitation medicine is often described as the science of restoring function. Dr. Virinder Singh Gogia reminds us that it is equally the art of restoring hope. Helping someone walk again is a medical achievement. Helping someone believe in tomorrow again is a human one. That combination has defined his life's work.

Shital Verma : The Artist Specttrum Profiles : Every newspaper has stories that readers remember. Few remember the person who quietly shaped how those stories looked before the first word was read. For more than two decades, Shital Verma has been one of those creative minds. Through illustrations, typography, page design and visual storytelling, he has helped readers experience journalism with their eyes before engaging with it through words. His creative journey, however, began much earlier on the ghats of Varanasi, where a curious boy watched artists from different parts of the world sketching the timeless beauty of the Ganga. Without introducing himself or asking questions, he observed their strokes, returned home and tried to recreate them in his own way. Those silent lessons laid the foundation for a distinguished career in visual communication.
