Popularly known as 'Swatantra', he has built a reputation through professional integrity, social commitment and an enduring interest in public affairs. A senior advocate based in Budaun, he has practised law for nearly thirty-seven years, earning respect for his legal acumen and balanced approach towards public issues.
His contributions extend well beyond the legal profession. Between 1999 and 2003, he served as the Judicial Member of the District Consumer Protection Forum, helping strengthen consumer justice at the district level. Earlier, he was the Director of The Kisan Sahkari Chini Mill from 1998 to 2002 and also served as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Twenty Point Programme Implementation Committee, participating in developmental initiatives across the state.
Writing has remained a parallel passion throughout his life. He worked with several newspapers during his journalistic years and authored two books, “Jau Jila Badaaun Hai” and “Paatheya”. A third book, a novel, is currently under publication. His writings reflect his affection for literature, society and the cultural heritage of Budaun.
My association with Swatantra Prakash Gupta goes back to the early 1980s, long before either of us imagined the directions our lives would eventually take. Those were days when ideas travelled through handwritten manuscripts and newspaper offices instead of digital platforms. I was a young student working on my New Type of Rail Joint innovation, while Swatantra was already actively writing for newspapers and literary publications.
He wrote several articles about my innovation and even accompanied me to the Amar Ujala office in Bareilly. That visit resulted in one of the earliest newspaper features on my work. Looking back at that faded newspaper clipping today, I see much more than an old photograph. It captures two young students at the beginning of their journeys; one fascinated by creativity, the other by journalism, literature and public life.
Life carried us in different directions, but the friendship endured. When I published my first poetry collection, “Isi Bahaane”, I dedicated it to Swatantra Gupta and two other close friends from those memorable years. It was a small gesture of gratitude for friendships that had shaped my formative years and continued to inspire me long afterwards. Some friendships survive because people meet frequently. Others survive because mutual respect quietly continues across time. Ours belongs to the second kind.
Behind the constitutional office is a person who has remained closely connected with ordinary citizens through law, literature and social service. Even after assuming an important public responsibility, he continues to value dialogue, relationships and community engagement.
Following a brief period of illness during late 2025, Swatantra Gupta has returned to active public life with renewed energy. Supported by his wife, Mrs. Pramila Gupta, a member of the District Juvenile Justice Board, and a close-knit family, he continues to balance constitutional responsibility with social commitment. Earlier this year, the family celebrated another joyful milestone with the marriage of their daughter, Aayushi.
Public positions may define a chapter of a person's life. Character defines the entire book. The journey of Swatantra Prakash Gupta reminds us that credibility is rarely built through a single achievement. It grows quietly through decades of professional integrity, public service and enduring human relationships.

Shri Swatantra Prakash Gupta ji,
ReplyDeleteYour work at the State Information Commission is highly commendable. You are not only a highly competent judge, but your system of functioning is so smooth and people-friendly that anyone who appears before you feels assured that injustice will not prevail.
Such dedicated and capable judges are rare to find.
With deepest respect.
