Engineering Tomorrow's Flight

: Imagine a runway that doesn't exist on the ground. Imagine two aircraft meeting in the sky so that one handles take-off while the other completes the journey. That idea is at the heart of the research being pursued by Sateesh Kache, a young aerospace engineer at IIT Madras whose curiosity is focused on solving tomorrow's aviation challenges rather than merely improving today's technologies.

Currently pursuing his Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Sateesh is researching an innovative concept that he describes as a "runway in the air." The idea proposes docking a hexacopter with a fixed-wing aircraft during flight, allowing each platform to perform the task it does best. By separating vertical lift from long-distance cruising, the concept aims to improve efficiency, increase payload capacity and support the future of drone logistics and advanced air mobility.

His fascination with aviation began long before joining IIT Madras. Growing up in a family where aerospace discussions were a part of everyday life, he developed an early interest in aircraft design and aeromodelling. Over the past eight years, that curiosity has evolved into practical experience. He has designed, built and flown more than fifty unmanned aerial vehicles, ranging from lightweight training models to large research aircraft.

One of the most significant milestones in this journey came through Project GARUDA at MIT ADT University, Pune. As the team leader of Team Skytrek, Sateesh led nearly thirty aerospace engineering students in designing, fabricating and successfully flying India's largest and heaviest electric radio-controlled fixed-wing aircraft. Measuring 9.25 metres in wingspan and weighing 261 kilograms, the aircraft achieved two India Book of Records recognitions following its successful flight at Dhule Airport on 4 May 2026. The achievement demonstrated what student-led research, teamwork and perseverance can accomplish when supported by an environment that encourages innovation.


Behind the record, however, was nearly four years of experimentation. The team encountered propulsion failures, redesigns, controller tuning challenges and weather-related setbacks. Every unsuccessful trial became another lesson in engineering. That willingness to test, fail, refine and fly again remains one of Sateesh's defining strengths.

His academic journey reflects the same commitment to excellence. After completing his BTech in Aerospace Engineering from MIT ADT University, he qualified the GATE examination twice with impressive national rankings before joining IIT Madras for advanced research. His technical interests span aircraft design, aerodynamics, flight testing, UAV systems and advanced aerospace technologies, supported by practical expertise in engineering software including MATLAB, SolidWorks, ANSYS and Fusion 360.

Yet Sateesh's personality extends beyond laboratories and workshops. A national-level rower, an avid trekker and an endurance cyclist, he enjoys challenges that demand patience, discipline and resilience. Whether navigating mountain trails, rowing across long distances or undertaking endurance cycling, he approaches each pursuit with the same determination that defines his engineering projects.


My association with Sateesh began during the India Book of Records programme at MIT ADT University in May 2026, where I had the privilege of presenting medals and certificates to the student team after verifying their achievements. Throughout my visit to Pune, he personally coordinated my travel and stay with remarkable efficiency and warmth. Despite leading one of India's most ambitious student aerospace projects, he remained cheerful, approachable and eager to ensure that everyone around him felt comfortable. Those qualities reveal a natural leader as much as a capable engineer.

When speaking about his future, Sateesh rarely focuses on records or awards. Instead, he speaks about making aviation more efficient, affordable and accessible. His ambition is to contribute technologies that help shape the future of flight, both in India and around the world. In an era when young engineers are increasingly pushing the boundaries of innovation, Sateesh Kache represents a generation that combines imagination with execution. His journey reminds us that every major breakthrough begins with a simple question, pursued with curiosity, persistence and the courage to keep experimenting.
