| Dr D. S. Kate: The Visionary |
Specttrum Profiles: Engineer, entrepreneur and economist Dr D. S. Kate of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra began his journey far from the professional and intellectual world he inhabits today. His childhood was spent in a rural setting, studying at a Zila Parishad school amid limited financial resources. There were few advantages waiting for him; education became the route through which he learnt to find his own.
That early
experience shaped a conviction that has remained with Dr Kate through the
years: development cannot happen without education. An eagerness to learn
accompanied him from childhood, along with an ability to rise through difficult
circumstances. Opportunities often had to be discovered rather than received.
Along the way, relationships and friendships became another asset he consciously
nurtured.
Civil
engineering provided the first professional direction. After completing his
Diploma in Civil Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Pune, in 1985, Dr
Kate entered the world of enterprise and eventually built the D. S. Kate
Group of Industries. Yet business never became the boundary of his
interests. Literature, arts, sports and social activity had attracted him since
his student days, when he also served as Secretary of the College Students'
Association.
Economics
gradually emerged as another major pursuit. Active involvement with the Arthakranti
movement led to deeper engagement with economic policy, financial literacy,
employment generation and entrepreneurship. For Dr Kate, economics was never
meant to remain confined to experts and textbooks. It had to reach households,
workers, entrepreneurs and young people in language they could understand and
use.
Writing became
an important part of that mission. His books include Arthadisha, Arthajagar,
Arthasampada, Arthaneeti and Arth Sandesh. His articles on economic
and public-interest issues have appeared in publications including Maharashtra
Times, Sakal, Saamana, Prabhat, Navakal, Gavkari, Divya Marathi and Lokmat.
Some of his writing has addressed practical subjects such as Reserve Bank of
India guidelines and banking and locker-related information.
The same ideas
have travelled through lectures, seminars, radio and television. Dr Kate has
spoken extensively on economics, entrepreneurship, employment generation and
financial awareness. All India Radio, Aurangabad, provided another
platform for his thoughts through a talk on Mahatma Gandhi's economic
philosophy.
Academic
enquiry has taken these interests beyond India as well. At an international
conference organised by the World Parliament in Solihull, England, Dr Kate
presented a research paper on economic and environmental concepts based on
Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy. Another engagement took him to London for a
research presentation on the benefits of cow's milk. As an Honorary Member of
the World Constitution and Parliament Association, USA, he has continued
contributing through lectures and articles on economic and environmental
subjects.
Perhaps one of
the most striking expressions of his thinking can be found far away from
conference halls, on a piece of barren land. Dr Kate took up rocky,
non-cultivable land and planted around 10,000 Kesar mango trees. Water
conservation became essential to sustaining the plantation, leading to the
creation of a farm pond capable of storing approximately 3.51 crore litres of
water. Experts had advised him against experimenting with agriculture, warning
that losses could affect his business.
His response
reveals more about his thinking than a list of achievements could: “Even if
I suffer a loss, I can accept it. I am planting mango trees; at least they will
give oxygen to our Earth. That itself is my profit.” Economics and
environmental responsibility meet naturally in that thought. Profit, in Dr
Kate's vocabulary, can have a meaning beyond the balance sheet.
The same
concern for society appears in other initiatives. He served as President of the
Coordination Committee for Ek Vari Samatechi, connecting the traditions
associated with Sant Chokhamela and Sant Tukaram from Mangalwedha to Dehu. In
2025, he was appointed President of the Rangatarang Marathi Children's
Literature, Arts and Cultural Conference in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Education
continues to return as a recurring theme. In June 2023, Dr Kate submitted a
proposal to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recommending the inclusion of
financial literacy and economic education in the school curriculum. The idea
connects directly with the boy who once studied in a rural Zila Parishad school
and came to believe that education and development cannot be separated.

| The "India Book of Records" felicitation |
His social engagement has sometimes focused on people whose contribution receives little public attention. A recent initiative honoured 41 crematorium workers for their service under difficult circumstances. The gesture subsequently entered the India Book of Records. For Dr Kate, the larger purpose was recognition; bringing dignity and public attention to people whose work generally remains unseen.
Recognition has
come to him as well. Over the years, Dr Kate has received honours across
economics, entrepreneurship, literature and social service, including the Maharashtrache
Anmol Ratna Award, Arthguru Award, Marathwada Bhumiputra Award, Rashtrache
Shilpakar Award, National Social Service Ratna Award, Times Brand Icon 2021,
Kaushalya Ratna Award and National Excellence Award. His book Arthajagar
received the J. K. Jadhav Literary Award in 2017. He was also awarded a
Ph.D. by Commonwealth Vocational University, Kingdom of Tonga. The complete
list is considerably longer; a selection is enough to indicate the breadth of
his engagement.
My own
association with Dr Kate is recent, but Aurangabad turned that introduction
into a warm personal connection remarkably quickly. When I reached the city, he
welcomed me at his office with flowers and a silver statue of Lord Ganesha. He
thoughtfully arranged my visits to Bibi Ka Maqbara, the centuries-old Panchakki
and the magnificent Ellora Caves, giving me an opportunity to experience the
heritage of his city alongside the professional engagement.
The warmth
continued at his felicitation programme, where he had placed my name as Guest
of Honour on the invitation cards and ensured generous acknowledgement
throughout the event. We also interacted jointly with the media. Yet the
lasting impression came from the smaller gestures, conversations and personal
attention surrounding the programme. Our discussions travelled easily through
books, economics, society, publishing and life.
Looking back at
the journey, an interesting line connects the different Dr Kate. The rural
student searching for educational opportunities became an engineer. The
engineer became an entrepreneur. The entrepreneur developed a deep interest in
economics. The economist became an author and public communicator. The
businessman planted thousands of trees on barren land and found his return on
investment in the oxygen they would eventually give back to the Earth.
